CHAMPIONS ROUND OFF SEASON: WASPS U13'S  24 - 22 RUISLIP

Wasps’ victory brought a successful league campaign to a magnificent end: a 100% record had been achieved. However, this wasn’t an easy victory. In fact, for 40 minutes, Wasps were chasing the game.  They went down to an early try and had to work hard to get level. Ruislip went ahead again and this time the try was converted, but for a second time Wasps fought back to get another try. Unfortunately the strong wind made it difficult for kicking and as the conversion fell short, we went into half-time two points down.

In the second half Ruislip’s massive pack began to take control, and Wasps seemed to tire, losing two quick tries – but critically, as it turned out, both were unconverted.  Slowly Wasps got back into contention, battling for every inch of territory. But then came a flash of inspiration and a bit of luck – Leonardo Kellaway, cleverly kicked into space and Matteo Salvalaggio charged forward (looking every inch the heir to that other famous Italian Wasp – Lawrence Dallaglio) – the ball popped up nicely for him and he ran under the posts to set-up the easy conversion. With the game poised for an exciting conclusion, Wasps sensed that they could edge it. In this situation a real match-winner makes all the difference – so, step forward Osman AlamyarWith pace to burn he rounded the Ruislip defence for a third time and ran in a try to complete his hat-trick. Joe Byrne calmly stepped forward to convert, gain the winning points and setting the seal on the U13s championship season.

Tries: Alamyar (3), Salavalaggio

Conversions: Byrne (2)

 FRIENDLY:  HARROW A'S 15 - 15 WASPS U13A'S

Today Wasps U13s got a taste of things to come. Next season they will face Harrow in League 2 and so this friendly match provided a good insight into the standard of team we will face.

Over the years Harrow have been an aggressive physical side, and today was no different. They were a constant threat, attacking with pace and power across all areas of the pitch. Wasps showed the mettle to cope with the Harrow onslaught and were unlucky not to scrape a win.  Peter Henshall had a massive game, mixing it up where it really hurts with some big hits. He also kicked well out of hand, combining deft attacking grubbers with excellent kicks out of defence.

Matteo Salvalaggio and Alexander Lundberg, who are so often the heartbeat of the side, scrapped and scrapped for possession relentlessly. It was therefore fitting that in the closing minutes they combined well to score Wasps final try to bring the scores level. Having played catch-up for most of the game ,Wasps finished strongly and looked as though they had the fitness edge to go on and win.

Harrow are to be congratulated for snuffing out Osman Alamyar’s attacking threat. All credit then to Osman for tenaciously chasing down their pacemen and making so many great tackles.

All members of the Wasps team should be congratulated for this hard fought draw – they will probably all have the bruises to show for it tomorrow!

Tries: Aherne; Kellaway; Salvalaggio

 FRIENDLY:  HARROW B'S 27 - 10 WASPS U13B'S

As Harrow had a squad size of only 21 this was substantially the same team that faced the A squad. Wasps second string did very well against the considerable physical power that Harrow possessed both in the backs and the forwards!

 FRIENDLY:  WASPS U13A'S  14 - 5  LONDON IRISH U13A'S

Wasps U13s proved they were capable of making a big step up in class with a comfortable victory against a quality team. The standard of London Irish's rucking in particular was well above anything that Wasps had come up against in their league campaign, yet despite the absence of several first choice forwards they remained competitive up front. This gave a good platform for the backs who played with renewed fluidity and always looked capable of making ground.

Typically Wasps put their opponents under pressure right from the kick off and it wasn't long before they scored their first try through Alex Lundberg. Irish came back and played an excellent kicking game but Wasps had most of the possession and territory. Scrum half Joe Kelly crossed the line with his pack in support but with some brave last ditch defending the visitors managed to hold them up. Pressure eventually told however and it was Wasps who scored again with a trademark break from Osman Alamyar.

In the second half, playing with the slope it was Irish who started strongest and after a line out in the Wasp's 22 their forward power gained them a try. However Wasps found another gear and weren't put under any sustained pressure. They finished the game over the Irish tryline but Alex Papalaziou's try attempt was deemed to be held up.

Although it was the team's narrowest win it was also probably their best performance of the season so far.

Tries: Lundberg, Alamyar.

Conversions: Henshall (2)

 FRIENDLY:  WASPS U13B'S  5 - 17  LONDON IRISH U13B'S

Once again Wasps B's were asked to play a side with much more match experience and once they showed a great deal of spirit and ability.

In the first half some dogged defence kept Irish down to one score with Charlie Clark outstanding. As players tired and the game opened up Leonardo Kellaway started to dominate play more and Wasps perhaps could have made more of some overlaps. In the event the only try for Wasps was scored by a London Irish guest player, Luke Thompson, who cut inside to take his chance well.

The team still needs to work on some basics like retaining the ball in contact and positional play but the performance once again showed that there is no lack of talent in the side.

 TABLE TOPPERS CONFIRM CHAMPIONSHIP: WELWYN U13's  0 - 36  WASPS U13'S

Wasps U-13s secured the league title with a game to spare with their sixth bonus point win on the trot. The score however was very harsh on a Welwyn side who often played the better rugby but ultimately were unable to cope with the power and pace of the Wasps boys. Wasps normally slick back pay was disrupted by some aggressive defense and they found it difficult to make progress.

After some poor handling early and indecisiveness from the team early on, Peter Henshall started to find space in midfield and eventually Joe Jones made a break out wide to open the scoring. This failed to galvanise Wasps who continued to find it hard to string passes together and retain possession. Welwyn's backs on the other hand were putting together some cohesive moves and spent much of the first half in the Wasps half. However, every time they made a handling error a Wasps player turned over possession and made a break that resulted in a try. Scores from Henry Pattison-Hudd, Osman Alamyar and Richard Mathieson resulted in a half-time score of 31-0.

To Welwyn's credit they tightened up defensively in the second half and restricted Wasps to just one further try. Some brave last ditch tackling by their number 14 stopped the score going higher. That the team should be disappointed by a convincing victory against a talented side is an indication of the standards they are setting for themselves this year.

Tries: Alamyar (2); Mathieson; Collins; Patterson-Hudd and Henshall

Conversions: Mathieson (2) Henshall (1)

 FRIENDLY:  WELWYN U13B'S  0 - 52  WASPS U13B'S

A second 13 a side game was played which showed the squad has good strength in depth. The B's often played with greater fluidity than the A's had shown and there was a notable debut performance from Leonardo Kellaway at fly half who dictated the game. Another debutant, Steve Richards, showed some searing pace and great handling skills and marked his first game with a try. In the forwards Alfie Maun and Charlie Clark also acquitted themselves exceptionally well.

Tries: Patterson-Hudd (3); Alamyar (2); Richards; Lubbock and Kellaway.

Conversions: Henshall (6)

 WASPS U13's  45 - 0  HEMEL HEMPSTEAD U13'S

The first league game of the New Year saw Wasps carry on where they left off in 2007. They steamrollered Hemel, dominating in all areas right from the start. Superior organisation among the Wasps forwards, combined with strong running and good finishing from the backs meant that Wasps scored steadily throughout. Wasps kept up their record of winning a bonus point in every match and stay on top of the table.

Tries: Alamyar (3); Jones (2); Patterson-Hudd; Henshall

Conversions: Henshall (5)

FRIENDLY:  WASPS U13 B  12 - 24  HEMEL HEMPSTEAD U13 B

In an exciting encounter Hemel proved a bit too strong for a Wasps side fielding several players making their first start in a competitive match. Hemel took advantage of Wasps’ inexperience early on, but Wasps’ heads did not drop and they fought back in determined fashion. Early in the second half Wasps levelled the score with a great solo run and try from Milo Brown. However Hemel were stirred into action and regained the upper hand, running-in two more tries to end up on top. Wasps’ rookies should be proud of this performance which shows that a team is always in with a chance if they keep trying and doing the basic things right (tackling and keeping their defensive position).

 WASPS U13's  24 - 0  AMPTHILL U13'S

Another good league win for the U13's against Ampthill, with a bonus point secured. The fact that a tough Ampthill side did not get on the scoreboard is clear evidence of Wasps’ strongest defensive performance of the season.

During a first half that was played in abysmal weather conditions, Wasps had to repel a number of early attacks with some strong tackling and chasing. After a quarter of an hour Wasps began to win more of the ball and gradually exert some pressure themselves. With only five minutes of the half left Wasps attacked down the middle and won a penalty five metres out. Peter Henshall, who was alert to the opportunity, took a quick tap and forced himself over the line.

In the second half, the Wasps' pack began to assert itself.  Solid in the scrum, they rucked well and became more effective in the loose. Henry Pattison-Hudd, Wasps' powerful lock, who had gone close to scoring in the first-half, powered through the Ampthill defence with a run of 40 yards to score Wasps' second try. From here there was only one team in it and Wasps went onto score two more tries, the final try  scored by Wasps' pacey new winger Osman Alamyar after a spectacular run. Wasps dominance in the second-half was built from solid foundations and Alex Papaloizou stood out at the re-starts. Each time he took the ball cleanly, made ground and re-cycled effectively to turn defence into attack. All in all this was a great team performance.

Peter Henshall, Henry Pattison-Hudd, Alexander Lundberg, Osman Alamyar

 HITCHIN U13 0 - 93 WASPS U13

Wasps league success continued today with another powerful performance.  Hitchin forfeited the fixture (giving Wasps a win and bonus point) as they could only field 14 players, but even with a loan player they were unable to hold a formidable Wasps team who went on to a massive 93-0 victory. Wasps clearly dominated in all areas, but to their credit Hitchin kept going. Of special note were the six tries scored by Osman Alamyar, with Hitchin having no answer to his power and pace. A great 2007 for the U13s - we're looking forward to 2008!

WASPS U13 B  0 – 15  ROSSLYN PARK B

Initially this game looked to be something of a mismatch with the Wasps team containing a significant number of boys relatively new to the game whereas the visitors were an experienced unit picked from Rosslyn Park's large squad. This was very evident in the way the teams lined up with RP clearly well drilled and Wasps often disorganised. Despite this the game was evenly matched in terms of possession and territory and Wasps regularly made ground particularly through Shannon Sutherland playing in his first game. The reason the visitors scored three tries and the home side none was probably better support running and more rugby nous in general but despite the loss this was a very encouraging performance.

 WASPS U13 A  5 – 10  ROSSLYN PARK A

A depleted Wasps team put up a creditable performance against one of the top sides in the Surrey league and perhaps should feel disappointed they didn't win. Playing into a very strong cold wind in the first half Wasps had little of the ball as the visitor's rucking was first class and all line out ball was conceded as it was impossible to throw in straight. Rosslyn Park were kept down to one try by some stout defending and then Wasps made a stunning break down the left wing through Osman Alamyar to equalise. Wasps looked favourites at the start of the second half with the wind now in their favour but Rosslyn Park's forwards continued to dominate and Wasp's normally slick backs didn't function well as a unit. Wasps became predictable in always looking to use Osman. An intelligent visiting team easily countered this and scored the only try of the second half.

 FULLERIANS U13's  12 – 22  WASPS U13's

The U13s notched-up their second league win of the season with a strong performance against Fullerians. Eventually winning 12-22, Wasps took control of the game early on with three first half tries. The first of these was the result of excellent passing and movement, resulting in Joe Jones making a pacey dash for the line.

Throughout, Wasps strength was their ability to move the quickly across the pitch making the most of good speed and handling skills in the backs. The forwards also put in another powerful performance; secure at the line-out and the scrum, they also rucked well and won plenty of possession.

In the second half Wasps didn’t have things quite so easy and Fullerians took the game to us, getting on the scoreboard with a try soon after the re-start. Wasps hit back, and the fourth try was a beauty with Peter Henshall kicking delightfully into space for Richard Mathieson to chase down and score.  Fullerians never gave up and a sustained period of pressure yielded another try. Wasps then worked hard to close the game out.

 WASPS U13 B's  5 - 10  LONDON IRISH U13 B's

A scratch Wasps team including a number of boys who could measure their rugby experience in weeks put up a very creditable performance against a strong and well organised London Irish team. The first half saw Wasps playing into driving wind and rain yet they held their own and in the scrums dominated a powerful looking Irish pack. However, in the loose their play was hesitant and possession was consistently turned over to a more savvy opposition.

Effective tackling in the midfield, particularly from Joe Jones meant that Irish were unable to turn possession into points until a break out wide gave them an unconverted try. Wasps came back strongly and Jason Lubbock seemed more put off by the gale into his face than the defensive tackling when, after a strong run, he knocked on just short of the line. Wasps pressure finally paid off when Henry Pattinson Hudd broke free to score.

The gods were not with the Wasps boys because having held Irish to 5-5 at half time they could have expected the better of the conditions in the second half but just as the ref restarted the wind died down and the rain stopped. Despite this Wasps initially looked the more likely winners and Osman Alamyar, on his debut, looked to have put them ahead with a searing break but his sheer speed took him over the dead ball line before he touched down. Irish then started to exert pressure and when their big number 8 broke out wide, a score looked inevitable but Martel Ramocan, another debutant, stopped him in his tracks and Joe Jones shepherded him into touch. However, Irish pressure eventually paid off and after being camped on the line for a few minutes eventually managed to get what proved to be the winning try.

Final score Wasps U-13 B 5 London Irish U-13 B 10

 HERTS/MIDDX LEAGUE
 BIGGLESWADE U13'S  5 – 47  WASPS U13'S

A powerful all round performance gave the U13s a win in their first league match of the season. Against a spirited Biggleswade side, Wasps eventually ran out winners by a score of 47-5. Wasps dominance was built on the foundation of a combative performance by the pack. They controlled the set-pieces, winning a series of scrums against the head in the first half – Elliot Jennings the hooker deserves special mention for this, but the front five were solid throughout.

Biggleswade never gave up and our back row were tireless in smothering out any danger in the midfield. In the third quarter of the game Biggleswade exerted some pressure, but tenacious Wasps defence limited them to one score.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was the fluidity of the Wasps movement going forward, with the backs making the most of quick ball with some exciting running and passing. Richard Mathieson was on form and finished well throughout the game scoring four of the seven Wasps tries. He also converted six times.

Tries: Mathieson (4); Collins; Lundberg and Bevan.
Conversions: Mathieson (6).
