NEWBURY NATIONAL TENS: WASPS' "SHOCK & AWE" CAPTURES CUP FROM NEWBURY'S LIONS' DEN
Rugby is a unique team game. Almost nowhere else in sport can success only be attained with a blend of brutal power; speed of thought, and a consistently high level of skill and athletic ability.
Wasps U15's attained the highest level in all three yesterday to win the Newbury 10s Tournament.
From an uncertain start, and facing quality opposition all the way through the day, Wasps grew in confidence and ability to eventually silence a partisan home crowd by completely outplaying the hosts in the final with a stunning display of fast attacking, wonderful rugby combined with astute, organised and at times brutal defence.
All 15 squad members contributed to a memorable day playing some of the best rugby of the season and scoring some exquisite tries. There were too many scores to go through, but one try summed up the day: breaking from a scrum inside our 22 Scott and Jacques combined up the blind side to make 20 metres. The ball then went through several pairs of hands before Oisin broke into the opposition 22 where he was brought down with a fearsome tackle, and there on hand to take the scoring pass was Yoni, having sprinted a full 75 metres from the scrummage to score the try of the season and, frankly, of any season.
Congratulations to the squad and many, many thanks to everyone who turned up to the 10's training. The preparation you were all a part of played a really important role in this victory.
It was a fantastically run festival. All of the club officials were incredibly helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The standard of refereeing and the standard of play was great throughout the day which all helped to create a wonderful rugby experience.
I would also just like to mention that the Newbury team conducted themselves extremely well after the understandable disappointment of losing the final. They were magnanimous in defeat, and both players and coaches were generous with their congratulations.
Once again the level of expectation has been raised by the performance yesterday. We have seen what this team is capable of, not only in terms of skill, power and tactical nouse, but also in terms of spirit, commitment and ambition.
It is up to us all to start next season where we left off yesterday. If we do then I think we can look forward to a fantastic year.

HERTS/MIDDX LEAGUE DIV 1: BISHOP STORTFORD 17 - 30 WASPS U15's
Wasps U15's stunned championship contenders Bishops Stortford with a bonus point win away from home. Bishops Stortford, looking for revenge for last season's 4-year unbeaten run broken by the 5-0 defeat to Wasps, were blown away with 20 unanswered points in a pulsating first 20 minutes.
For half of that time Wasps were reduced to 14 men when Kelwin Miles was sin binned for some ambitious defending. But 2 long range penalties from Alex Hodgkinson and a superb textbook -suck in the opposition release the backs- try scored by Jacques Whittle. More intense pressure led to Charlie Jewers charging down an attempted clearance and touching down for the converted try.
Bishops Stortford came back into the game through a series of penalties pushing Wasps back to their own line where a defensive gaff at a 5-metre lineout led to a soft try. They scored a converted try just after half time after pressurising Wasps at another lineout.
Wasps came back hard in a much more even second-half affair. Great handling and support work from Sam Stanier and Alex Gorrie set up a great field position for Ben Robey to storm over the line for a try.
Cammy Mulcaire, off the bench and back from injury, stormed through a lineout creating mayhem in the backs for Scott Spurling to pick up and score the bonus point try.
A late consolation try for Bishops Stortford slightly flattered the hosts.

WASPS U15B 71 - 0 RUISLIP U15B
I do not normally single out players for special praise but I am going to make an exception this week. Here goes...
1. Hugo- In spite of county training that afternoon we were desperate for a Prop and Hugo volunteered. Had a great game in the tight and loose.
2. Lewis- Best game of the season, couple of tries, everywhere in the loose, led by example.
3. Yoni- Captain and led the team by example. Quiet authority, he got the team motivated and focused, for the whole game.
4. Paul Ipavec- Confident in the lineout took alot of opposition ball, and along with James bossed the contact areas and kept churning the ball back.
5. James, Immense effort in the loose, rucked and carried the ball well.
6. Paul Herbertson- Great game, scored his first try for wasps and along with his backrow colleagues was everywhere
7. Alex C- Best game for Wasps, confident and presented the ball well.
8. Louis B- Led from the front never missed a tackle, some great gallops with the ball, kept alert all game.
9. Phillip- Great game, lots of ball and varied the attack well with some lovely kicking out of hand. Much quicker in thought and action.
10 Alex D'A- Asked to play at stand off for the first time he was stunning. Controlled the game, ran the back line beautifully, always one step ahead of the opposition.
11. Henry W- Hatrick of tries, great display of power running, confident with the ball in hand, worked hard all day.
12. Alex Gorrie- With Alex D'A and Harold tore the opposition to shreds, bursting tackles running in 2 or maybe 3 tries.
13. Harold- Once again always dangerous with the ball and it looked like the three of them had been playing in this formation all of their rugby lives.
14. Guillaume- Best game yet. Great ball presentation in the tackle and committed in defence.
15. Rhys- Never out of position. A couple of lovely bursts into the line, solid in defence.
So there you are 11 tries, 8 conversions, 71 unanswered points and 15 great performances. You can only play the team that turn up and it was a credit to you all that you kept going. The support play, ball presentation and playing pattern was the best we have seen all season. The trick for us all is to take this momentum on into training and into the next few games. Well done everyone and thank you to the county players who turned up to support their team mates.

HIGH WYCOMBE U15's 0 - 77 WASPS U15's
During the team talk at High Wycombe I asked the squad minus the 13 district and 3 injured players a question. I asked this team missing so many regular squad members if they were ready...? Ready to represent this club and this team?
77 unanswered points later in difficult circumstances the squad, to a man, had given their unequivocal answer. This despite our no. 8, Fansu, suffering a dislocated ankle and fractured leg in a horrible freak accident in the first half. The game was stopped for over 40 minutes whilst an ambulance was called and attended to Fansu.
While our thoughts are with Fansu as we all wish him a smooth and speedy recovery, I also want to thank the whole team who were a credit to the club, the U15's, and the game of rugby in coming back onto the field in fairly distressing circumstances and playing with huge spirit and commitment to ensured that everyone will remember the game for great attacking rugby rather than just a freak accident.
The game itself, from the off, was pretty much one way traffic as a High Wycombe side, weakened by commitments to the local RGS, capitulated in most departments. But the way that Wasps went about their work from the start meant that they never had a look in. Impressively, once on top, this new look team never relaxed its vice-like grip on the game. The tries came thick and fast.
In the backs, Harold's run of scintillating formed continued with a hat-trick of tries. The pick of the bunch was a show-stopping dart inside and out from an exquisitely timed pass from Dylan, who stormed back to form and ran the opponents ragged scoring a fine individual try and distributed the ball beautifully all day. Alex G, back to his rampaging best was another beneficiary of Dylan's timing, searing through the defence and sprinting 50 metres to the line.
Alex D'A timed his attacking runs from full back beautifully to score a couple. Henry W, impressive on the wing, barrelled over the line and would have scored another had he not been dispossessed over the line. Rakim was unlucky not to score but typically was unselfish in his distribution and solid in his defence. Paul D was always looking for work on the wing and Sean at fly half ran the show beautifully with clever subtle variations in play. In hand, and with boot, he ensured that our opponents never knew where the next attack was coming from and he converted most of the tries to ensure the scoreboard rattled along. At Scrum half both Phillip and Guillaume distributed the vast amounts of ball that we had really well to keep the pace of the game at a level our opponents couldn't deal with.
It was the pack, however, that set the tone for this match, and from the off the front row of Yoni, Lewis and Timi minced the High Wycombe scrum. I think we lost 3 scrum balls the whole match in total. James and Paul in the second row, with help from Fansu, cleaned out the lineouts, and in the back row Louis B was absolutely everywhere and totally committed all game. Alex C and Fansu were always a good couple of metres quicker than their opponents to the break down.
After Fansu went off, Paul ensured business as usual, moving to blindside wing forward which gave Thomas a good run out in the second row which he relished. The forwards also chipped in towards the overall score with a couple of typical route one tries from Lewis and captain for the day, Yoni, who led by example and captained the team extremely well in testing circumstances.
But the try of the match was Fansu's picking the ball up in his own half, shouldering a couple of attackers out of the way and leaving two more for dead with his sidestep before outrunning a winger to score under the posts. I hope it is not too long before we see him do that again for Wasps.
