Wasps Spartans 0 Battersea Ironsides 12
It was a gamble that paid off superbly on Saturday 11th November. Grant Dwyer and Sharkey Jarvis decided to take a gamble and try to field a third men's side. Grant enthused that "it'll be right mate".
Saturday came and the turn up for the game was fantastic. David Davies and Peter Scrivener came from London Wasps. Mark Bernie, Nathan Billing, Clyde and Skelitor were there from the Cubans. And Churchie fronted up from the Buccaneers. Battersea Ironsides are young and fit and from the kick off it looked like the score could turn ugly for the Spartans.
Battersea whipped the ball right and left at a pace that had some of the Spartans banging their pace makers to prevent a major coronary. Gordon Kennedy replete in Kilt, ginger wig and dagger had already threatened three of the opposition with a stabbing if they crept offside again. John Coburn agreed with his compatriot and spent the afternoon dispensing clattering tackles and advice on devolution.
The Battersea onslaught was relentless but the Spartans tackled with a ferocity that brought the game to life. Peter Scriv and Andy Ireland got through a huge amount of work, as did Clyde on the wing. Battersea eventually broke through and scored a try under the posts, which was converted. The Spartans fought back and were very unlucky not to get an equalising score. Spikey Aplin was replaced at scrum half by Dave Davies who offered Spikey £200 if he came off. Spikey took the money but Dave then told Sharkey that Scrivener would beat it back out of Spikey in the Changing rooms. With Dave Soprano at number 9, Stuart and Phil Lundberg took the field along with Hertford King.
The second half saw a Change of ref. - Simon for Joel Goodman and a war of attrition with very little give between the sides. With 10 minutes to go Battersea put the afterburners on and swept in for a well-taken try. The Spartans rallied and were very unlucky not to score from a 15-man effort that fell short in the left corner.
The final whistle brought much clapping from the excellent crowd who had braved the cold.
The day was a startling success and the consensus is that we play every 3 weeks at home for the rest off the season. The next game is at home on the 16th Dec. Time of kick off 1230 hours. The Cubans are at home for a 1400 kick off in the league vs. Pinner Grammarians and the Buccaneers play London Welsh at 1430 hours.
A list of thank you's: To Battersea Ironsides for coming over at the last moment. To Hertford King for buying the Spartans kit. To all the supporters for braving the weather. To Joel and Simon for reffing. To David Davies for letting us use the pitch. To all the players who have found a renewed desire to get clobbered on a Saturday. (I saw Felicity Lundburg in tears at the thought of spending another day at the club). And a special thank you to Churchie for playing back to back games for the Spartans and Buccs.
See you all on the 16th. Bring your friends! We will open the bar!
Cheers,
